Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

We have the our 3-year-old Beta 38 engine pulled right now and while it is out we are planning on opening up, cleaning, and replacing the oil pan gasket as there is some evidence of oil leaking from the flange.  The replacement gasket is paper.  I've done some research and found differing opinions on types of gasket sealants and application techniques.  Some say smear a thin layer of sealant on both sides of the gasket, others say only tack sealant in the corners and any rough areas.  Any tips from Beta on how to properly replace the gasket?  Also, Permatex has lots of different products, is there one that you recommend for this project? Thanks.

The people who say this are correct. Any good automotive RTV silicone sealer will work.
