I have just ordered a couple of BD1005 engines and I am preparing the boat for installation. I have a couple of questions: I can route the fuel supply from the tank to the motor below the engine level but that would make for a ugly installation, I would like to run the line from the tank (18" deep) up about 30" and then back down to the engine. this would create a situation that with the tank being almost empty and a fuel pump without prime the lift had to be about 48" Is this OK or am I asking too much? Do you recommend using a quality fuel filter like a racor 120 or is the filter on the BD1005 sufficient? Thanks in advance, Arjan Bok www.rotkat.com
Congratulations on your purchase. I will deal with your questions in reverse order. 1) We always recommend a primary fuel filter/water seperator in addition to the one fitted to the engine which will then become the secondry. As a matter of personal preferance, I would use the Racor 500 FG. Although this unit is much larger and more expensive than the 120, it will be much cheaper to maintain over a period of a few years because the replaceable elements are much more reasonably priced. In addition, because of the brilliant design, if correctly installed, if you are caught out with a blocked filter in an emergency, you can replace the element without losing the fuel prime on the engine. 2) As far as the routing of the fuel lines, I suggest that you mount the afore mentioned Racor with it's in and out ports at the same height as the engine and fit a shut off valve on it's intake port. This way you should achieve the hose run that you want. Use 10 or 30 micron elements in the primary. Using 2 micron will possibly slow down the lift pump as all these lift pumps push much better than they can suck.
