A question about alternator input and output.

I have a new BD-1505 that I'm delighted with. But...I have a big house bank and a dedicated starter battery. With the old Balmar alternator and controller I started the engine with the engine battery and the alternator charged the house bank only and a combiner fed juice to the starter battery as needed. Can I do that with any ease with the standard alternator on my Beta? I really like the alternator seeing the big house battery. Thanks for any ideas.

Hello Ken,

We have a split charge system which is simple and easy to install. This is made up for bulkhead mounting and you then will have seperate cables from the house battery and from the engine battery. This is however usually fitted with the 100 amp alternator and my records show that you ordered the 65 amp alternator.

If you look at the wiring diagram on page 59 of your owners manual you will see how the split charge relays are wired up.

The wiring diagram on page 48 shows how to connect using a blocking diode system. I personally dont like this option because I have found that blocking diodes take some power away from the alternator.

Regards, Stanley
