Beta 28hp - Min diameter water inlet

Im in the process of installing a new Beta 28 in my 1965 Allied Seabreeze.  The engine manual states the raw water intake needs to be 1 dia. Minimum.  The boats old Atomic 4 inlet is ~1/2 diameter.  I noticed the engines  inlet pipe for the raw water pump is ½.  My question is since the inlet on the engine is ½, do I need a 1 diameter sea****, or since the manual covers the 28hp-38hp, is this requirement really stating the min for the 38hp and ½ for the 28hp is fine?

I have another option of accessing/using a ¾ thru hull fitting already installed in the hull for the raw water inlet.  Would this be sufficient for the Beta 28?  If 1 is the min. requirement for the 28hp, Ill pull the ½ thru hull and re-drill for a 1 thru hull fitting. Thanks in advance.

The raw water intake is not 1/2" as you state. It is 22mm which translates to 7/8".
If you use a 3/4" intake thru-hull, you must make sure that you have a full flow fitting and valve.

Stanley,

Thank you for your response.  I finally made it back down to the boat to remeasure the inlet and we're both wrong... the ID of the inlet is 5/8".  See attached pic (sorry for the poor quality, but the scale is still readable).

I've already removed the old sea**** and will be installing a new 1" diameter full flow sea****.  Still a little troubled though... is 5/8" correct since you are saying it is actually 7/8"?

Thanks,
Chris
