I'm interested to know your thoughts on the effect of running the engine in neutral just to generate power/charge batteries through the twin alternators.
My engine is a B34 Greenline canal engine on an inland waterways boat in the UK.
I've always been told that this can cause cylinder glazing.
Hello, this is not just an urban myth. It is a real problem for some makes of engine.
On the bright side it is extremely rare to find a Kubota engine with this problem. Some of the competition's base engines are not built to the same standards and I suspect that their metalurgy is to a lower standard as well. Their rings are also weaker and these polish their cylinder walls and cause the glazing and thus a loss of compression. In 35 years of working on diesel engines I have rebuilt a good number of other makes of engines because of glazing, but never a Kubota.
This is not to say that it cant happen to a Kubota (Beta Marine) but it is extremely unlikely.
