Trans for Maxprop

confuse Hi,
I'm in the middle of repowering my Westsail 32, but before I confirm my order for the 38hp Beta, I would like your recommendation as to what trans to order with the new 3600 rpm engine? I currently use a 16" 3-blade Maxprop with the MD3B Volvo I'm replacing. I know Bud has recommended the PRM120 2.5/1 with the earlier engines. Thanks for your info.

Hi,
The lastest spec engines run up to 3,600 so I have changed the transmission ratio to the 3:1 (actual 2.94:1) to keep the prop speed down. This limits cavitation and prop wash noise.

Set your 16" Max prop to 14" pitch RH and then enjoy the drive from your new engine.
Regards, Stanley

Hmm...it would have been good to know about this before I bought my 1505. I thought I was ordering a 3K RPM engine and when I received it I found it was 3600. The attached 2:1 gear is really a bit too tall. A 3:1 gear would have let me run more than 8.5" of pitch on my 16" three blade max prop and reduce the shaft speed to a better RPM and get a lot more bite in the water with more pitch. Any trade in allowance on the shorter gear? My current engine setup is really less than optimal due to the final drive ratio.

You can see the transmission ratios available on this page of our website http://www.betamarinenc.com/tranmission%20opt%20small.htm

I suggest that you contact the dealer who sold you your engine as well as contacting me directly.
