What if I forget the stop button?

My 33HP diesel tractor has one switch: off-heat-run-start.

To stop the motor, I simply turn this switch from run to off.

The beta 20 control panel C operation is more complicated and has a separate stop button.  I know that someday I will forget to press the stop button and instead will switch the keyswitch to off without having pressed the stop button.

What will happen?

And will that do any damage?

Regards,
Chet

Hello Chet,

Turning the key switch to off will not stop the engine. It will stop the alternator from charging.

The stop button must be used to stop the engine and the key switch should be turned to the off position only after the engine is stopped.

Turning the key switch to off and then back to on while the engine is running will cause a power surge at the alternator. It is highly recommended not to do this.

If the key switch is turned to off while the engine is running, press the stop button and stop the engine before turning the key back to the run position.

Best regards,

Farron

Farron,

Thanks for answering my questions. I'll need to be careful of this, and instruct others of the same when at the helm.

Does that solenoid and manual stop lever on the engine turn off the fuel supply to the engine to stop it?

Best regards,
Chet

Hello Chet,

The Beta diesel is shut down by cutting off the fuel at the injection pump with the stop lever.

The stop button energizes a stop solenoid that pulls the stop lever to the off position.

If required, the stop lever can be activated manually at the engine. All that is required is to push the stop lever towards the solenoid with your finger.

Once it is started the Beta diesel does does not require electrical power to continue to run.

Best regards,

Farron Peffer

Farron,

Thank you again.
Being an engineer, I needed that understanding of how it works.

Best regards,
Chet

Is this stop lever the place to install a manual remote stop , via a teleflex cable, so that one can stop the engine without having to enter the engine room, like in case of fire? Is there a fitting or tab or nearby bolt that could support a small bracket for this on the Beta 50?

Thanks
(potential new purchaser)
Brian

Hello Brian,

Welcome to the forum.

You are exactly right. A cable can be anchored on the engine and operate the stop lever by hand via a cable. There are a few different points on the Beta 50 that will work for mounting a bracket.

The Dix 43 Pilot house is a great looking design. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for the quick reply! I have a very detailed building blog at www.odysseyyachts.com. She is looking quite lovely, if I do say so myself!
