I just purchaced a Morris Leigh sailboat (30") 10,000# displacement full keel.
It needs repowering soon. Currently has a Westerbeke W-13 Diesel. Weight of engine/trans about 298 lbs. Would not want to go any heavier than that.
As to props not sure I would like the drag of a 3-blade on sailing performance. How much does one lose by doing that. I have had luck in the past with a Campbell-Sailor two blade on my Morris Frances with 14hp Nanni.
Also I sometimes motorsail. Are Beta engine mounts up to the task or is it not reccomended? Usually 10-15 degrees of heel at the most.
The Beta 20 would be more power then you will use.
While the Beta 14 would be adequate, the Beta 16 would be a great choice. This should give you plently of reserve power.
The Beta 16 weighs in at 205 lbs and will be more compact then the W13 it replaces.
The 3 blade prop will give the best performance. Calculated at 6.3 kts with a 13 x 8 propeller.
A 3 blade prop will work better behind that big full keel. It will also give you the best thrust from the diameter that you will be allowed to fit under the hull bottom.
Loss of speed from a 3 blade prop compared to a two blade prop will vary from vessel to vessel. Unless you are racing or making very long runs the slight loss of speed is usually an acceptable compromise.
There will be no problem with a heel angle of 10-15 degrees while motorsailing.
