Keith here, s/v Saga (the Allied Seawind 30' ketch).
My exhaust system snapped at a weld a few inches aft of where it exits the engine (BD722). I removed it, had it welded, and re-installed it, but was still worried about it. I am in Wrightsville Beach, so I called Josh from Specialized Marine, the local Beta dealer. He came to my boat and checked the exhaust system and told me that it should be re-done or that I will likely have ongoing problems. I agree with his assessment.
I just wanted to let you know that Josh has been very helpful and locals here say that he is the best around.
I have the exhaust system out once again as well as both mufflers (remember that odd set-up?). I am doing away with one of the mufflers and hopefully will be back under power by tomorrow evening.
Take care. Keith

It looks like an involved modification was made to the standard high rise elbow.
Bracing may be required when this much extra metal and weight is added to the standard high rise. Bracing will take the strain off of the installation.
Of course proper welds are primarily important.
You are in very good hands with Josh from Specialized Mechanical Services. His excellent reputation with the locals in the Wilmington area is well deserved.
Good luck! We will see you the next time you pass by Oriental.

Josh gave me the same diagnosis and predicted that if Idid not make some changes that I would have ongoing problems. (I can't tell you how reassuring it was to get the same diagnosis from both of y'all).
It took some doing on my part to rout the exhaust properly because of the compression suppot for the mizzen mast, but I got her done.
I now have a "normal" exhaust -- pretty much a straight shot from the exhaust to the outlet on the transom, and only one flame arrester/muffler. It sure looks better.
I can't say enough about Josh at specialized mechanical. He crawled over my boat and gave me his diagnosis (including a sketch of what needed to be done) even though he knew that I woud be doing the work myself. After I finished, he came back out to see my handi-work. When I thanked him he told me that he hated to see anyone with a Beta having problems. And to be fair, it wasn't even the Beta that was giving me the problems, it was the modified exhaust system that the previous owner had installed.
