The new problem with the idling rpm


 
 
 

Hi Stanley
I still have problems with the idling rpm.Last season the rpm go over 1000 and that creates a metallic sound from the saildrive wich is because the engine run to fast, so please give me a solution to decrease the rpm so my saildrive doesnīt crash.

Hello Jan,

The first thing to do is disconnect the throttle cable at the injection pump and then run the engine. Make note of the RPM at idle and I suspect that you are likely to find that the idle speed comes down to 900 RPM with your finger touching the lever to stop the lever moving away from the stop. This is the correct idle speed for all the small engines. If this is the case, then adjust the length of the throttle cable accordingly. Also make sure that the saddle clamps that hold the outer cable are secure.

If the idle speed with the cable disconnected is still over 900, it is a simple matter to adjust the low idle speed stop bolt but you must have a photo tach to confirm the engine RPM before you you attempt this.

I have tried to do what you describe but there was no change of the rpm. It was still above 1000 rpm and I also tried to adjust speed stop bolt but there was no change at that time either so thatīs the reason why I wrote to you again regarding this matter.

I donīt know if you remember but I had this issue in a question sent to you 2 years ago but at that time I only asked if it was possible to decrease the idle rpm because I experienced it to be to high.

Why do I need to have photo tach becasue I have the tachometer mounted in the instrument panel which was delivered from Beta UK.
I think it could be that the injection pump need an adjustment, or if there is some other function which creates the problem.

Hello Jan,

I always recommend using a photo tach when making adjustments to the settings on the engine because they are extremely accurate. The tach on the instrument panels are never as accurate.

There is an idle spring which controls the rack on the injection pump. This can be adjusted externally but I cannot post the instructions on this forum as the forum doesn't accept pdf files. If you email me directly at stan@betamarinenc.com I can forward the instructions on to you.
