I have the B1005 Beta engine. Installed it 5 years ago and it has been great. My battery bank has a starter battery and 2 house banks. One deep cycle and 2 6volt in parallel. These run through a battery isolator, which is no longer working. I need to replace the isolator and have run into a question. Does the alternator have an internal or external regulator? This is the 65 amp alternator that comes standard with the engine. I have considered going to a Automatic Charging Relay, but could figure out how to change the battery system to the ACR without some major changes
The 65 amp alternator is internally regulated. The easiest way to connect two banks of batteries for charging purposes is to use a voltage sensative relay. BEP make some good ones at very reasonable prices. Here is the link to their website http://www.bepmarine.com/
If you want to increase the charging output of your alternator you will first need to change the pulleys on your engine so that you can get more output without destroying your belts all the time. Here we have the best solution with our polyvee belt system (serpentine type belt).
