Yanmar 2GM20F replacement

Glad I found this site.

I'm in the throes of making a final decision about replacing a 2gm20 that has exhausted my patience.  The boat is 33ft overall, 26ft waterline and weighs about 9500 lbs dry. I'm guessing the cruising weight of the boat (full fuel and water, normal cruising equipment and stores) is 10,500 to 11,000 lbs.  The boat currently has a 16 x 10 fixed two blade prop which is original equipment.

I'm thinking about the Beta 20 as areplacement but was wondering about the Beta 25 as an option because I would like to have a little extra power in tide races, etc.  The 20 transmission has almost the same gear ration as the KM2P on the Yanmar so I'm thinking that I would not have to do much pitch adjustment.  However, i'm wondering about using this propeller with the 25.

Any thoughts advice would be appreciated.

Hi Gord,
I replaced a 2GM20F in a Tartan31 with a Beta20 last winter. Boat displacement is similar to yours. I decided to try the summer with my existing prop which is a 2 blade 15X12.
The engine and prrop seem to match well and I have plenty of power. Boat makes hull speed easily. the 3 cylinder engine is a great improvement.
I posted a summary of the work and some photos on this forum, the posting is probably around page 6 or thereabouts.
Stanley and company won't steer you wrong.
good luck.

Hello Gordon,

Using the specs you have provided I would suggest a Beta 20 with a 2:1 gear and a 14 x 8, 3 blade propeller.

A 16 x 9, 2 blade would also work but will not be as smooth running as the three blade prop. This will be particularly so if this is a full keel boat.

If this is a full keel vessel with a wide keel in front of the propeller consider a larger diameter (16") 3 blade prop and a 2.6:1 gear ratio.

Best regards.
