Which gear ratio?

Hello,

I am repowering my sailing vessel and I am thinking seriously about the Beta 20 with the TMC-40 transmissión. It came with three gear ratio possibility: 2.00:1; 2.45:1 and 2.83:1. Which one is best for keep my present prop two blade 15 x12 ?. My vessel weights  only 8.000 lb., old design fin and skeg and 27 feet WL.

Would be the Beta 16 enought for maximun power?. Can I keep that prop with the Beta 16?.

Hello Tormentin,

The Beta 16 should be plenty of power for the vessel as you describe it.

With a 2:1 ratio gear a 15" diameter, 2 blade propeller would be fine. You will probably need to re-pitch your existing propeller.

Hi Farron,

thanks you for your prompt reply, I will go then to Beta 16.

One more question: what pitch do you think would fit the 15 " diameter, 2 blade folding propeller. My boat is a 1973 strange brand, very similar to the Contesa 32.

Hello Tormentin,

The Contessa 32 would displace 9500 lbs versus your vessel at 8000 lbs. The Beta 20 would be the recommended engine for the Contessa 32.

An 8000 lb vessel with a 24' LWL, powered with a Beta 16 and using a 2:1 gear calculates to a 15 x 9, 2 blade propeller.
