Trying to weigh the cost of rebuilding the existing Westerebeke W46 vs. a new Beta. The Westerbeke is 28 years old and the parts are getting very expensive. The displacement of the vessel is listed at 21,700, however the waterline has been raised at least 3 inches, so the displacement is considerably more than the original number. I currently have a 18 x 13 prop and a Hurth 150 with a 1.88 gear ratio. The Beta 43 obviously can push the boat to hull speed but I am thinking when I have to push into head winds and seas I might be better of with the Beta 50. (I tend to motor more than most sailors). What is your recommendation on HP?
Quite a few Krogen 38's have been repowered with Beta Marine engines. The consensus is that the Beta 50 with 2:1 transmission works extremely well and provides a good reserve of power. You can keep your current propeller and can expect 7.5 knots boat speed with a comfortable cruise of 6 to 6.5 knots. The engines replaced have been the W46 and the Perkins 4.108. In each case the cost of a complete rebuild has been fairly close to replacement cost without the warranty of the new engine and new technology.
I dont discuss pricing in the forum as this will stop its use a resource for later users. Can you please email me directly on stan@betamarinenc.com and I will respond.
