Beta 20 External Regulator

Hi,

I saw another thread about adding an external regulator on a 75 amp ISKRA alternator. It was said that any alternator shop could make the necessary modifications . Would this also apply to a Beta 20 early model with the 70 amp ISKRA? Will the Balmar unit work with this model also? Same type modifications?

Mostly looking to put the bulk charge on the battery bank in the morning and let the solar top it off during the day. Hoping to do this at a lower RPM. Am I on the right path?

Thank you,

Carl

Hello Carl,

The Balmar external regulator can easily be fitted to this alternator. We have a brush box which replaces the internal regulator and makes installation of the external regulator much easier.

I have just had a new Beta25 with a 75amp alternator installed a month ago in my Baba30 sailboat.  I do want to use my existing Balmar MC612 regulator.  However, I could not find any technical info for the 75amp alternator.  Would you please help me with such info?  Thanks in advance.   David

Hello David,

There are two different types of internal regulation used on the compact 75 amp alternator. I am not sure which type that your alternator is using.

My advice is to take the alternator AND regulator to a competent alternator shop and have them install field wires that will allow the Balmar regulator to function with the alternator. A competent alternator shop will be well versed in what is required. This has been done by Beta owners in the past with great success.

Thank you for your reply.  My engine WOC no is K35893, & engine # is D902-4GD3521.  Can you identify which Alternator it has?  Also, please provide its technical info?  Best regards.   David

Finally, I took the alternator off the engine and had the internal regulator taken off the alternator for examination.  It should be not too difficult to modify the internal regulator assembly (with brush housing).  However, instead of modifying the one I have, I would like to buy a spare regulator to do the modification.  Went online trying to find Iskra AAG compact alternator spare parts, it could not be found as Iskra sells only alternative repair kits.  Also, ebay or any others suppliers only have different models.  If you have any info as how I can get this regulator please let me know.  Or, if you have any suggestions please let me know.  Thanks in advance.  David

Hello David,

It makes sense to actually call Beta Marine. You may just find what you are looking for.
