I have a 1984 38' Cabo Rico sailboat with a rebuild Perkins 4-108. I would like to replace the Perkins with a Beta 38 or 43. Any suggestions or recommendations?
A number of Cabo Rico 38's have been repowered with the Beta 43. This engine with the 2:1 transmission seems to have the right amount power and plenty of reserve for this vessel and everyone is happy with the performance. I think that the 38 will be adequate without the extra reserve.
There were a few different builds of the engine compartment in these boats. Some had regular parallel engine beds and some had stepped mounts with the front engine mounts very low and rear ones very high. The boats with the standard parallel beds are very easy to change the engine out as there is quite a bit of space in the engine compartment. The boats with the stepped beds take a lot more work and some custom engine mounts.
The engine is mounted further to the stern of the boat compared the the newer CR 38's. I will check to see if the engine pads are parallel.
Also I have a Belt driven watermaker high pressure pump attached to the Perkins - does beta have any optional equipment that could support the belt driven Pumps?
