Hello and welcome to the forum.

The PRM 90 uses ATF.

Recommended type is Dexron II, III, IV.

It is very important that you not overfill the gear box. Make sure oil level is between the high low mark on the dipstick and not over the high mark.

GWP.
Please check and let us know exactly which transmission you have fitted to your engine.
Also please let us know the WOC number of your engine.
When you provide the correct information, you will get the correct answers.

Ok, the transmission is a PRM120. It has had 15w40 in it since the first oil change.
On draining the oil, it looks clean and nothing stuck to the magnet on the drain plug. This is s routine oil change, but overdue. I have had no problems. The manual specifies 15w40, but it is not clear
Thanks

OK, one last question: After looking at the PRM website they recommend ATF dexron 2 or 3. Can I use synthetic ATF dexron type 6 which is backward compatible with type 2 or 3?
Thanks

Now that we get the correct information, we can provide the correct answers.
Your engine and transmission date back to 2007 and are to a different spec than the latest 2017 models.
Your transmission was built to use 15W/40 engine oil and if you are not having any problems, I fail to see why you want to change to something else.

We do not recommend synthetic lubricants in these transmissions. It is possible to use ATF dexron in these older gears but it must be throughley flushed out first to avoid any contamination.

OK this is beyond frustrating. I had an email from PRM saying use ATF. The manual for the PRM120 states use ATF. They don't manufacture the PRM120 anymore, rather the PRM125, so I dont think there are any 2017 PRM120 gearboxes.

Further to this: The engine is set up to easily drain the oil as it comes with a built in pump. The transmission however has a drain plug underneath the case and is very hard to get to in my boat. Is there a kit available to convert the transmission so that easy oil change is possible?
Thanks

Why is this frustrating? When your transmission was built the spec said to use 15W/40. Now that has changed but your transmission is still 10 years old and to the spec that was built then.
As I said in my previous post. You can use ATF if you want to, just flush it out properly first.

To answer your other question. We do not have an oil drain kit for these or for any other transmission. We could make one up for you but we would need to know how much space you have under the transmission on your boat. I suggest that you contact your local dealer for this. Most boats do not have enough space under the gear to allow for an oil drain fitting so the transmission oil (fluid) is normally pumped out through the dipstick hole.

Thanks. Is there a pump you can recommend for the PRM transmission? I read somewhere that the 120 does not have a path past the gears to the bottom of the transmission.....not sure if this is true

What you have read is incorrect. If you take out the dipstick, you will have a clear path straight down to the bottom of the transmission.

Any hand held oil change pump will work as long as the suction tube fits in where the dipstick came out. Your local Beta dealer can order one just like the one of your engine or you can get one of the other ones available from West Marine or one of the other chandlers.
