OVER HEATING

I recently over heated and discovered my coolant was very low. refilled and ran under load with no signs of a leak. I'm suspecting my radiator cap. Any thoughts?

Do you have a coolant recovery tank?

You can see one at this link http://www.betamarinenc.com/product/coolant-overflow-tank/

Should we have some amount of coolant in the overflow tank (enough to fill the hose between the radiator cap and the tank and maybe 2 - 3 cups) or have nothing in the tank or hose, but be available to catch any overflow should it ever happen?

yes I do and it was empty. I refilled the tank and added fluid to the recovery tank as well. I ran the engine again with no signs of a leak , however the level in the recovery tank has now gone down.

It is a simple matter to use a pressure tester to check the cooling system and the pressure cap with a radiator pressure tester. This will take the guesswork out of the diagnosis.
We had an issue last month with a boat that had a similar problem. When the pressure tester was used a leak was found at the hot water heater.
