adding a strainer between raw water pump and heat exchanger

I am thinking of adding a strainer between raw water pump and heat exchanger to prevent broken impeller piece getting into heat exchanger.  (did have such issue with the old volvo and I added a strainer with clear window to solve the problem.)   

The existing tube on Beta is a metal one.  I am thinking of using rubber tubes. The issue now is the size of the tubes.  My engine is a Betamarine25 installed at the end of 2016.  If anyone has this info please let me know.  Thanks.
