I have had a couple correspondences with Michael Kasten and intend to purchase from him estimating plans for a small aluminum trawler when he returns from overseas. Power recommendation is 50, and on his page for this boat he mentions Iveco, Lister-Petter, Deutz, and Kubota by Betamarine, and others. The Iveco is gigantic by comparison the the V2203 and I would prefer something that wouldn't take up so much space in a small engine room. I am curious about the recommended service interval, and whether it can be mated to Saab HVP gear.
I have no idea if the Sabb variable pitch propeller system will fit on the BV2203. We can supply the engines with various transmission options and if you can supply the bolt up data and drive plate requirements I am prepared to do the research to see if we can do this for you.
As far as service intervals are concerned the standard requirement is for oil and filter changes at between 150 and 250 hours depending on the oil pan (sump) capacity. However if you only use the engine for about 50 hours per year I suggest that you change the oil and filter twice a year.
I emailed saab to attempt to obtain the bolt-up and drive plate requirements. I also emailed to you a drawing I pasted from their "brochure". While I believe it to be useless to you, I hope that it might provide some sort of "good-faith" gesture.
Meanwhile I have read good things about oil bypass filters, such as offered by Gulf Coast. Mr Kasten has advised me, however, that some engine manufacturers withdraw the warranty with this type of installation. Does Betamarine have a policy on this matter?
I have ordered estimating plans and expect them any day. Perhaps the builders on Mr Kasten's short list will also be able to advise me.
Hello Vance, The email that you sent to me shows a basic drawing on the SabbHVP and I believe that we can fit this to our engines with no trouble. The bolt up pattern and size looks identical to the Borg Warner (Velvet drive) and this is one of our standard adaption kits with an oil cooler for the hydraulic transmission. The only question is the spline requirements for the drive input and I am sure that this will not present ant problems once we have the full information.
As far as the bypass oil filter system that you inquired about, all oil filters have a bypass system, as do Kubota. If you want to fit one then no problem after the warranty period. The problem with an extra filter, or using this in place of the Kubota one is a pressure drop that may be experienced. If there is a problem in the warranty period and the engine failed then you are on your own re warranty.
