I have a 1973 DuFour 35 TM (=tall mast; 53 feet) 12,000 lbs with a 1972 Volvo MD3B that has an overheating problem. I just can not see rebuilding a 35 year old 630lb engine when these Beta's, they are so pretty. (at least on the web) I need to repower on a budget and I am interested in the BD1005 or the BD1005D (with saildrive). My budget and space in this boat may push me to the 20 or 25 hp. Is anyone familiar with the Dufour 35 or done a repower on one. I would be very interested in any issues anyone has with repowering this vessel. We have a boat show here in Annapolis MD and I plan to talk to the folks from Sound Marine Diesel. I read some good things about these folks with sales, service and knowledge. Any input would be great.
Hello, We will definately be at the Annapolis Sailboat show in October and can show you around our engines. You will find that they are better in the flesh than they are on the web.
I believe that your boat has a regular transmission behind the engine and if this is the case, I suggest that you forget the saildrive option as this will only complicate the installation and cost you a lot more money.
Some of the older Dufour's had a down angle transmission and we can supply this as well as the standard transmissions. The BD902 (Beta 25) is all the engine that your boat needs to acheive hull speed and have a good reserve of power. If you want a larger engine you can fit up to the BV1505 (37.5HP) and still have an engine that is physically smaller, lighter, smoother and quieter that the old MD3B. The new generation diesel engines are much cleaner burning and more economical than the old ones as well. We can supply any of our engines to fit on the old Volvo engine beds.
I look forward to seeing you at the show. Regards, Stanley Beta Marine US Ltd www.betamarinenc.com Tel: 252 249 2473 877 227 2473 (toll free) fax: 252 249 0049
Yes my boat has a regular transmission i believe it to be a 1.91:1 ratio. I need to talk to you about the down angle my engine apears to be mounted in a down angle situation so the engines shaft/transmission is in alignment with the propeller shaft.
I really like the sound of going to the 25hp if it can save me money. BTW your web site is very informative compared to other sites more facts less fluff, easy to find info. I am looking forward to meeting you at the Annapolis Boat Show.
Thanks Mike Canvas Wizard, Inc. PS. I saw you in the video from you web site and you sure have clean hands for a mechanic!
