BV1505 - Start to max revs'

Hi:

I have about 35 hours on my new Beta 1505 and today when I started the engine to go sailing - I could not control the RPM and it ran very fast until I shut off the fuel supply.

I tried to stop the engine with the instrument panel button but that failed also.   (Actuating the stop button w/o the engine running - I could hear the cylnoid (sp) click.)

Checking the throttle linkage from the ****pit to the engine - it was working as expected and moves the throttle lever normally.

2 weeks ago the engine performed normally.

Ideas on why no throttle control of the engine? as well as how to fix?

Jay

Hello Jay,
Just to confirm, the throttle works correctly at the engine?
Where are you located?
What oil are you using and when was it last changed?
What is the Woc# of your engine?

It could be any one of the following;
1) the rack for injection pump has a spec of dirt on it and this is causing it to hang up
2) the throttle cable is not correctly fitted to the governor control on the engine
3) the stop solenoid has failed and thus wouldn't shut the fuel supply off.

Regards, Stanley

yes the throttle linkage and lever on the engine move open and closed normally. I also disconnected the throttle linkage to be sure the lever moved correctly.

I'm in Alameda Marina - I sent a message to Ethan H. also.

I use Delo 400 40 weight (I think it's 40 weight) I have changed the oil/filter 5 times as I also managed to get water into the block several months ago - you recall my phone call.

I don't have the WIC number at work -- I'll give it to you from home later tonight.

Hello Jay,

Now that I have the rest of the story, I am almost certain that you have a spec of dirt or rust on the injection pump rack. This was almost certainly caused by the water that was forced into the engine.

I suggest that you contact Ethan, he can remove the pump and attend to this for you.

I would use 15W-40 multigrade where you are.

Regards, Stanley

WOC # K21548
Engine type B-38HE
Engine NO 8C7780

I was at the boat on Friday and here is what (working by phone with Ethan Hirschfeld who was a big help and is also working on a solution) we found.

1. The Control Rack becomes jammed aft and until I pry it back and forth a time or to and then there is a pop (like some metalic object is sprung loose) and the Control Rack is free and moves easily w/o resistance.

2. All the levers behind the Speed Control Plate are at all time free to move (but not very far when the Control Rack is stuck)

3. Freeing up the Control Rack - reinstalling the Speed Control Plate and the engine stop solenoid - then restarting the engine results in a very short run time (2-3 sec) while the engine runs per the throttle position then the engine goes to a high rev condition and the Control Rack is again jammed aft. I have to pinch the fuel line from the fuel filter to shut off the engine.

4. At Ethans suggestion (and I should have thought about it ) I checked the pre engine fuel filter and the pre filter glass bowl was 1/2 full of water. I replaced the pre engine fuel filter, cleaned up the bowl and also replaced the engine fuel filter. I found a small bubble of water in the fuel from engine fuel filter. This tank (Stb) was filled (35 Gallons) after the engine was installed on 3/13/2009 and I haven't used the tank until October 7 for about 2 hours.

5. The photo's on the site below are all high rez of the area behind the Speed Control Plate and to my eye don't show signs from the water event earlier in the year.

Photo's at http://picasaweb.google.com/jaybietz/Engineoverrun?authkey=Gv1sRgCNry09WWsZ6CTg#

6. The injector pump assembly has NOT been removed - awaiting your input from the issues above are understood.

The question now is what causes the Control Rack to become jammed when running the engine?

Cheers
Jay

Hello Jay,

Basically, water is a lousy lubricant and will damage the injection pump. What you have described is exactly what I said in my post a few days ago. There is a spec of dirt or rust on the rack causing it to hang up. Now that you have said that the fuel system was also possibly contaminated with water into the other side of the pump, I believe that the pump should be removed and serviced at a fuel shop.

You also need to fix whatever is allowing water into your fuel tank. This may be as simple as the "O" ring on the fuel filler not being as good as it should or it may be more involved.

Good luck, Stanley

thanks for the reply - I'm 99% sure the water came in with the fuel load in March.!!

OK I'll be removing the injector.

With my engine information above - can you tell me the model of Bosch in-line injector pump my engine has?

The injection pump is made by Zexel, not Bosch.

That's good info -- Is there a model number in the documents?

Where is this going? What are you trying to achieve?

Any competant diesel fuel shop will be able to service this pump. Beta Marine can also supply a complete pump or parts for it. These will be Kubota parts. I suggest that if you want to buy any parts, that you contact Ethan.

I'll be taking the pump to Diamond Diesel - hopefully this weekend some time - I'll get the model after removal... I was just trying to get all the data I could before taking it in.

I'll advise as to the findings.

Hi:

An update on my engine.

I removed the injector pump by removing the speed control plate (unhooking the Governor Spring and start spring) (10MM socket), intake manifold (10MM socket), injector tubes(17MM box end wrench) and fuel lines(factory clamps snap open) and finally the injector pump (5 MM allen).

After aligning the control rack pin with the notch in the crankcase, the injector pump easily slids up and out of the block.

I'll note that there is no apparent sealent needed or used on all the items above.

The ID of the injector pump is an Zexel PFR 4K Model 10426-4001. The model number is found on the body of the casting which is inside the block.

I have the pump at Diamond Diesel of Oakland for repair and will know more next week.

Stanley:

I have reinstalled the injector pump and took her out on the bay - and without any wind - we motored for a 30nm miles w/o any issues.

Thanks for your assistance.
