engine installation

I am just starting the process of installing my beta 20 into a catalina 30.

will be bringing the stringers into 16" on centre (from 19") using hardwood that will be lagbolted and glassed into the current stringers... then the engine mounts will be bolted into the new stringers....

..sending power to the engine - is via the starter motor / solenoid....

does this also send power to the c - deluxe control panel..or does the panel also need an independant power source...

my current old panel has lots of wires .. for lit gauges etc / fuel gauge / ammeter / etc,, so
not too sure which ones to keep ...may jist get a new fuel gauge and new wire for it...I presume all the other beta gauges are powered and lit via the wiring harness assembly..

Hello,

You can get rid of all the extra wire that has been used for your old panel. The new installation should be neat and clean. The plug in harness for the panel is all there is. The only other wiring is the two battery cables, positive to the starter solenoid and negative to ground on the engine.

I suggest that you use a good di-electric grease on the multi pin plug terminals (corrosion X HD or Boeshield) as this will keep the wire ends and terminals free of corrosion for many years. Also use a cable tie to make sure that the plug doesn't come apart.

You can pick up 12v for the fuel gauge from the AC terminal behind the ignition switch.  There is an extra wire in the harness (yellow) that you can use to connect to the fuel gauge sender.

Regards, Stanley

Stanley,

I am installing a fuel gauge and your manual says if you pull power off the accessory from the switch, you need a resistor.  Is that true or can I just pull the power off the switch?  thanks for the tip of the yellow wire in the harness for the sending unit.  Can I also run a blower off the switch.

I am finishing the install of a Beta 16 on an Islander 30.

thanks, kent

Hello Kent,

A resistor is not required. You can take power directly off the accessory terminal to run a low amp draw item such as a fuel gauge.

In order to run a higher amp device such as a blower, you will need to use the accessory terminal to activate a relay switch.

The relay itself will have a low amp draw but it can be sized to operate a much higher amp draw device such as a your blower.

Your engine harness includes a small brown wire that runs from the accessory terminal of the key switch to the engine harness near the starter motor. This wire is normally unused and is available to you to operate a relay. This wire is shown on the harness diagrams  in your owners manual.
