Re-power Willard 30

I want to Re-power my willard 30.   #14000 displacement, double ended motor-sailor

It originally had a perkins 4-107,  (which is still running after 35 years).   Borg Warner Velvet drive 2.57.1 reduction.  1 1/4 inch shaft ,  18 inch by 14 pitch prop.

The Perkins has plenty of power for my needs.  Never looking to make much over 6.5 knots.   Looking for economy and smooth operation.

May want to rebuild the BW and re-use it,  but would be open to a smaller, heavy duty, IN-LINE transmission,  and a greater reduction would be OK, too.

Hello Capt.

I would go with the Beta 38. This engine is much smoother running and quieter that the 4.107 and has some nice features like a self bleeding fuel system.

If the boat were mine, I would have the Velvet Drive "freshened up" and then fitted to the new engine. Not only is this transmission very understressed behind a small diesel, the rear mounts should be on the transmission and keeping the same layout will make your installation much easier. The new engine will come with 4 flexible mounts, just fit the aft ones on the transmission. We can supply the Beta 38 with the correct adaptors for the Velvet Drive and this kit includes an oil cooler and the hoses for the transmission.

You can expect a very quiet 6.5Knot cruise with close to 8Knot wide open. My prop calc comes up with 18"x12" three blade propeller with 50% blade area ratio.
I hope that this helps you.
Regards, Stanley

Hi Stanley,

Is this the place to talk prices of the beta 38,  bobtail, 100 amp alternator, one full panel, and one standard panel,  and what are the supplied engine mounts?

I repowered my 32ft Dreadnought with a Beta Marine 28 horse model. It was originally powered by a SAAB 10hrs, model. The Dreadnought has 20000lb displacement and the BetaMarine 28 moves it along at hull speed without breathing hard.
