Heat exchanger end cap stuck

Sorry to keep bothering you, but expertise is hard to come by where I am.  I have had both end caps off the heat exchanger previously, but now the rear end cap refuses to budge.  I know that after you remove the bolt it is just a friction fit, but it won't come off!!  Tap it?? Where is safest?  Try to turn it with a pipe wrench?  Always up for your invaluable advice.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Hello Ken,

This is usually a simple fix. Just put a phillips screwdriver into the hole where the bronze bolt was and jiggle the screwdriver. This should free the end cover with no problem.

I too removed my heat exchanger this spring. The end cap was difficult to get off but it finely broke loose.
The problem I have is the heat exchanger itself was stuck and I ( like a dummy ) tapped the end of the heat exchanger with a hammer. Well it's brass and doesn't like steel, the hole were the bolt goes in was damaged.
The bolt is a 5/16-20 which is a odd thread and is sure hard to find a tap!!!!!!.
I hope I'm right with the thread type and if so why such a different thread ?????
Can anyone help?
thanks
Jim

Jim,
The heat exchanger bolt is 8mm. We have them in stock made out of bronze.
Next time, I suggest using a small block of wood between the hammer and the tubestack. This way you wont break anything.
