Beta 902 install in S2 9.2a

Dear Stanley,

I am replacing the Yanmar YSB-12 this spring  in my 1977 S2 9.2A (aft ****pit).  The Beta BD902 (25hp) looks good as a replacement based on information on this board and the Betamarine websites. We have large tidal currents here in the San Juans and British Columbia (usually when going dead upwind in a channel) and the boat is loaded to about 11 to 12,000 lbs with gear, 500 amp hrs. of battery bank, and tows a dinghy. It looks like you have replaced some of these Yanmars with Betas. I have a few ordering / install questions for you:

1)   The Yanmar manifold looks relatively higher rise (although standard). Is the standard Beta manifold ok or do I need a hi-rise? I have a 2 inch waterlift on now and would plan to put on a Vetus rear muffler to get the final exhaust loop up before coming down to exit.

2)   Is the 70 amp alternator the largest supplied? If so, I believe it could be adequate if equipped with an external multistage regulator. Can this be supplied or do I need to have the alternator modified and get the regulator on the aftermarket?

3)   I am assuming the Yanmar install angle is ok so the standard Beta transmission will work. Correct?

4)   Any advice re: the mounting feet dimensions? It would be nice to not have to modify the engine bed. Will the standard oil pan fit? Any other thoughts on dimensions / fitting?

5)   I understand there is a fiberglass fairing that can fit the C panel and perhaps be modified to better waterproof the panel. Will the standard harness reach or do I need an extension to mount the panel in the same place?

6)   Finally, I am thinking of putting on a Kiwiprop, which seems like a good value. I believe others have installed these with their Betas.  Have you heard good feedback?

I have been genuinely impressed by your level of support for Beta customers. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks.

Within the last year I put the 25hp in my 1978 Hunter 30.  Love it!  Its over powered but I like it that way. I also put in the upgrade alternator. Had some trouble with a little back pressure on the exhaust resulting in some high temps turned out to be my thru hull was a little to small.  I'm running with a 14" Right hand 9 pitch prop.  Think I need to go down to about a 7 pitch.  The engine ruvs up to 38rpm with no load and I get about 3100 top end.

I'm very pleased with the engine, smaller than my Yanmar YSM12.  Any questions feel free...

Hello Scott,

The Beta 20 will do you fine. The 25 is overkill but will still fit on the same engine beds and will give you many years of quiet and trouble free motoring. I'll answer your questions in the point form that you asked them;

1) Order the 2" high rise exhaust elbow with your engine. This should work fine for you.

2) The 70 amp is the largest that we fit. There is not much space on the engine and these alternators are small case alternators. If you want an external regulator, I suggest using an Adverc controller. We keep these in stock and you can read about them here  http://www.adverc.co.uk/product/12

3) the install angle will be fine with the standard TMC40 transmission

4) Again you should have no issues. Expect to have to drill new holes but otherwise the width for mounting centers should be the same. However, you may have to raise up the engine beds with some pieces of oak (about 2.5"x2.5"x 18").

5) You can get the panel recess information here http://www.betamarinenc.com/Panel%20Recess.pdf

6) I have heard good reports about the Kiwi prop from some customers but have never actually seen one.

Have fun, Stanley
