Engine mount bolt size?

Can you tell me what size the bolt is for the Beta 38 hp engine that holds on the engine mounts?

If you could also the tap size?

Are the bolts any special strength?

OK I should have could have just cut the ground from the engine to the mast (lightning) off and put a new one in another location. Did I do that NO! I at the time thought if the bolt turns easily then just take it out and replace the ground and put the bolt back in. Sounds simple enough right?

 Bolt

The bolt is partially screwed back it.

The engine mount is under the oil filter. The bolt is on it's way out here.

So the bolt turned easy enough but then as it was coming out it got tight again and then got tight again etc. Got the bolt out and it has a few chewed up threads. Hmmm I bet the threads inside the engine block are chewed up a bit too.

So now what.

My thinking, here I go again, is to purchase a tap and run it up inside the engine block fixing the threads if they are damaged.

Then purchasing a new bolt.

Then put some Lock tight on it and the new ground cable and thread it back in.

The bolt has a lock washer. They make me nervous when it comes to damaged threads as they put stress on the bolt.

Should I can the idea of putting the ground wire back on this bolt?

Put it someplace else and just put the lock tight on the bolt and no lock washer?

Or should I put some oil on it and thread it back in with the lock washer and no ground wire.

Yes the oilf fitler is leaking oil also

Yes the oil filter is leaking oil also. The engine has 15 hours on it. The oil filter we can replace and that should stop the leak.

Hello Chip,

It looks like you have created custom mounts. The three socket cap bolts in the photo are factory bolts. The factory bolts in the photo are 10mm bolts with 1.25mm threads, grade 12.9. This is a high tensile bolt, normally available in a socket head style only.

The tap size would be the same, 10mm with 1.25mm thread.

I cannot identify the hex head bolt as it is not factory supplied.

I would carefully chase the threads and replace with a 10mm bolt with 1.25mm threads, grade 12.9. Check your depth.

I suggest that you find a better place to ground for lightning protection. It does not make any sense to try and direct a lightning bolt through your valuable new engine. A lightning strike through your engine will most likely damage it.

Be aware that Beta Marine supplies a flex coupling with the Beta 38. This flex coupling electrically isolates the engine from the propeller shaft.

If you used this flex coupling you no longer have a path to ground via the propeller shaft. This applies to both lightning protection and shore power grounding.

A hull mounted ground plate or other such mass of metal would be better suited for a lightning ground.

Be very careful with the bolt length. Get one no longer than the one that you damaged.
If you force in too long a bolt, you stand a chance of damaging the engine block.

CouplingHi,

"Be aware that Beta Marine supplies a flex coupling with the Beta 38"

We do not have this coupling.

 Thanks,

Chip
