Trying to re-use exisitng shaft in good condition, I mounted my new Beta 482 shaft/propeller assembly too tight so that the propellor hub is rubbing against the strut in exceleration conditions....I don't have the 1/2" min space recommended between the propellor and rear portion the strut, cutless. I probably have 1/8" at the most after I aligned and tightened the coupling.
I have the factory transmission coupling to shaft coupling. I'm dreading re-bedding the engine as the engine mounts are lagged into the existing fiberglass/wood engine support runners.....meaing that re-locating the engine mounts by re-drilling would place the new hole too close the existing. At the present, I have minimum clearance between the coupling, packing gland, etc.
Is there a spacer or longer transmission coupling fix for this keeping the engine mounts in their existing locations? I'm proposing 1/4" as the shaft turns freely under normal load...I just need a bit more extension.
I have attached a photo that you sent me of your installation. You have the standard Buck Algonquin coupling. There is a longer coupling that we can supply which will solve your length problem but because it is also much larger in outside diameter (see 2nd attached photo) you may have other clearance issues to the hull. This coupling does cost more and will be charged for.
It may be cheaper to get a machine shop to make a spacer to fit between the shaft coupling and the flex coupling.
