Will the Beta 30 be an OK motor for my Tartan-37 sailing vessel:
lol 37 feet
lwl 28.7
beam 11.75
draft w/ keel 6.75
draft w/o keel 2.4
max hull speed 7.15 knot
prop is currently 16 RH 12 3-blade
replacing a very broken Westerbeke W40 38hp at 3000 rpm, I would run around 2000rpm getting about .6 gallon per hour and 6 to 6.5 knots clean hull calm water...
looking at Beta 30 and wondering if correct choice and what gear ratio to spec for prop?
We have a Valiant Esprit 37. It had a Westerbeke 30 and we installed a BETA 38 and it is PREFECT!! The 30 would be OK, flat water, no current etc. Today we were punching into a head 25+ kts and we were hold 6 knots of speed. No way could we have done that with the old 30..
Hello and welcome to the forum. The boat specs that I am using for the prop calc can be found here http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1826
Please let me know if this is the correct boat. A nember of these same vessels have been repowered with the Beta 38 with good results.
I have run 3 different scenarios for you;
1) using the Beta 30 with 2.5:1 transmission. The prop called for is 17"x11" three blade RH. Max boat speed is estimated at 7.1 knots
2) using the Beta 38 with 2:1 transmission. The prop called for is 16"x9" three blade RH. Max boat speed is estimated at 7.3 knots.
3) using the Beta 38 with 2.45:1 transmission. The prop called for is 17"x12" three blade RH. Max boat speed is 7.5 knots.
In each case I have worked on a propeller with 50% BAR and have found that the Michigan Wheel MP3 and DJ355 propellers work well with my prop calc program. Obviously the Beta 30 will provide somewhat slower acceleration than the 38 but otherwise should prove a good power plant for the T37.
None the less. We ordered the Beta 30 with 2.45:1 TMC60 mechanical gear box transmission on 2/12/2014. And I already have a good shape 1" shaft and 16RH12 three blade prop... It should ship the third week in March into Guadalajara, Jalisco MX. Using your input as well as a few other sources, I never buy the first thing I see that addresses my needs, it is a bit compulsive so says my wife! Here is blog entry for motor stuff with our svHajime http://svhajime.wordpress.com/ may need to page down an entry ot two to the Feb 2014 entries!
From there we have to arrange customs and ground transport over to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Marina Riveria Nayarit... Getting it from Guadalajara to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is probably another story!
Thanks,
James

Looking for help on determining the right J-Prop to put on this old boat
Just installed a new Beta Marine 35 to replace the Westerbeke 30 original Engine that gave up the ghost in Daytona as i was sailing the boat from Tampa to Massachusetts. The transmission and V-Drive were removed from the Westerbeke and put on the new Beta.
The current Prop is a LH 2 blade Bronze which is now quite worn out. Last summer when heading into a crowded Woods hole, against a strong current, the boat could not power through and essentially stood still while boats, had to maneuver around me.
Boat is 17,000 lb displacement, the transmission is a Paragon P21ML, 1.99 :1, shaft is 1" Stainless What size and prop configuration would be the best match for this boat. Have heard nothing but great things about the J-Prop so would like to go this route
I would use a 17" diameter three blade J Prop on this boat. The difference in drive will be dramatic.
Please email me directly at stan@betamarinenc.com for pricing.
