Raw water pump

Hi Stanley,

I wish to purchase a spare raw water pump for my Beta 50. Is the pump made by Beta, or is it a propriery pump such as a Jonson? I also wish to purchase spare bearings, seals and a shaft for my existing pump. Can you quote on the cost of these items please.

Hello Bill,

The earlier Beta 50's used a Jabsco pump.
This changed to a Johnson about 10 years ago and for the last two years the pump has been made by RFT especially for Beta Marine.
All the pumps use the same impeller.
If you send a photo of your pump on the engine, I will identify it for you.

Hi Stanley,
Once I removed the pump, I could read the info on the impeller cover. It is a Johnson pump. I have fitted a new seal, so I am OK for now. I would prefer to have a spare Johnson pump.
I assume that the Johnson and RFT pumps interchangeable, but does that also apply to bearings, seal etc?
Bill.

If I were you I would stay with the Johnson pump. It is a good pump and you already have the correct spares. We keep these in stock as well as the new RFT pumps.

The new pumps use a completely different mechanical seal and were developed to allow for a longer pump body to clear the wider belts used on the newest engines.

Stanley,

As a follow-on question.  I have the RFT pump on my Beta 60.  I have had one replaced under warranty when the rear seal failed at 50 hours.  My preference for a spare would be to have a make that is more widely available,  than the RFT which I believe is made in Scotland.

Can I buy the Johnson and easily mount it instead of the RFT? Are there any concerns with switching on this engine?

Thanks,

Michael

Hello Michael,

The bearings and impeller on the RFT pump are the same as the Johnson one.
Except for the first few pumps with a faulty clip behind the seal, we have not had any issues with these pumps.
The Johnson pump is much shorter and needs an adaptor to fit on the timing cover. We can supply this as well as the RFT one.

Hi again Stanley,
I have decided to purchase a spare Johnson raw water pump, and a rebuild kit for my Beta 50. That way, I can quickly change a leaking pump, and rebuild the used one at my convenience. Can you please quote, and include shipping to Malaysia.

Hello Bill,

Here it will be best for you to contact Eddie Tan. As you know, he is the Beta Marine distributor for Malaysia and can most likely provide a better price than I can.
Our pumps are shipped here from the UK as are Eddie's. Why pay double freight?
