We have a BD 722 in our sailboat. We love it but are breaking dip sticks. The dip stick breaks at the crease indicating "full" and then drops into the pan. This has happened four times in the past two years. We don't do anything other than check the oil prior to startup.
Questions:
I understand that there are different dip stick tubes for this engine. Mine is a long one with the hole for inserting the dip stick near the top of the engine. Is breaking dip sticks a problem that was corrected with a shorter tube? If so, should I replace the tube with a shorter one?
Should I pull the pan and get the broken dip sticks out or not bother?
The dipsticks are being broken by the crank shaft hitting the end of the stick that protrudes down into the oil pan. This is caused by a bent dipstick tube. It is possible for the tube to be bent out during engine installation or during engine servicing.
Look at your dipstick tube from the front of the engine. The dipstick tube should be straight up vertical and not pushed out, away from the engine at an angle. If the tube is angled out, gently push it back to a vertical position.
This should solve the problem.
I would not worry about the pieces in the bottom of the pan.
