I feel like I'm always the one to ask the stupid question, but so be it
I have an older D722, serial # 545598. I have a manual I downloaded for the D722, but it's apparent that the model featured is well newer than my motor. I'm unclear as to how to drain the coolant-I'd like to inspect the heat exchanger before the season starts. Could you please advise?
This is not a stupid question at all. I have had to ask the factory as your engine dates back to 1995 and we have no record of it. Records of these early engines are not complete as selling dealers often made changes without notifying the factory.
I have attached a photo of the block drain fitted to many BD722 engines. This was only used on engines with the standard mounting feet, not on the engines with the Atomic 4 replacement feet which just get a plug as the valve and elbow inteferes with the narrow A4 replacement feet.
If you engine has this valve, it will be on the injection pump side just below the lift pump.
If this is not fitted, I suggest that you disconnect the lower hose from the circulating water pump to the heat exchanger tank and flush the system properley. Unfortunately this option will cause a mess that you will have to clean up.

Alas, I do not have a valve (block drain) installed beside the lift pump as in the photo, so it appears I'll need to disconnect the lower hose. I believe our D722 is an A4 replacement. Speaking of the lower hose, have I identified that correctly in the attached photo? I assume I'll disconnect the upper clamp to drain coolant.

You have the lower hose correct. I would disconnect the copper tube from the hose. This way you have a chance to collect the sticky anti freeze in a container.
