Beta 30 Calorifer connections

Hi I have a 4 year old Beta 30 WOC K28539. I fitted a calorifer early this year and it works fine except the revs have to be quite high (around 2500) before coolant starts flowing through the calorifer. The agent said it was best to take the coolant from the side of the thermostat housing rather than the top but I was unable to find a brass elbow which would anywhere near fit without fouling the housing cover so I took it from the top. Is there a special elbow to take the coolant out the side hole or am I stuck with the top?

The engine has been great; just done 1000hrs.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I have attached photos showing where the supply and return fittings should be fitted. When done correctly this system works really well. The correct fittings are available from Beta Marine.

If the temp switch (sender) is fitted to the supply position at the rear of the cylinder head, I suggest moving it to the position under the thermostat housing. You will need a reducing bush for this (1/8" BSP to 3/8" BSP) and this is also available from Beta Marine.

Thanks Stanley your info is much appreciated. I have just finished moving my supply to where you suggested and the difference in immediate flow is huge.

Incidently the pic you sent of the supply position is the same as a pic in my engine handbook which describes it as a return position!

I've been watching this forum for a couple of years now expecting at some time to be using it: it's a terrific service and you are obviously a gold-mine of knowledge about these engines.

Thanks
