B-25 tach calibration needed?

My mechanic tells me that I should, at some point, check on the engine rpm's and be sure that our factory-optional 70 amp alternator is correctly communicating with the engine panel tach.

I have only put a few hours on the engine so far, and have not throttled up over 2900 or so with no load. With load (in gear and under way) we are motoring at 7 kts, at 2500 rpm,  with a clean bottom, normal for our boat and prop. This engine is rated at a higher rpm than the former Universal M25XP that it replaced. Transmission ratio is only one tenth (.1) different.

On the 'net, finding a reasonable deal on an optical tach is not too hard... but I wonder how necessary this checkup is for a new engine package.

Thanks much,

Loren

Hello Loren,

A tach calibration should be part of every installation and performed by the installer during the start-up and test run.

If your tachometer is off calibration it is easily corrected.
