km per gallon?

Hi,

We are plotting some courses and were wondering what our km per gallon of fuel might be?

Our boat:

Beta 38 hp motor

Cruising speed 2200 rpm

Islander Freeport 36 ft sail boat

26,901 lbs fully loaded travel lift weight

3 blade prop

Any ideas? Our boat is currently in Mexico and we are in the us so there is now taking it out for a sea trial at this time.

Thanks,

Chip

Hi Chip,

I'll take a stab here since it looks like the forum has been quiet for awhile...

Fuel consumption per km will be a function of many parameters (weather, sea-state, hull form, windage, prop efficiency...). Fuel consumption per hour is a little more manageable as it's a bit less sensitive to many of these parameters. My experience has been that the published Beta Technical Data Sheets provide a reasonable rough estimate for fuel consumption per hour (https://betamarineusa.com/usa-resources/Data_Sheets/Engines/B38/#page=2). The data sheet for Beta 38 indicates 2 liters/hour (~.53 gal/hr) at 2200 rpm (based on the theoretical loading of a properly matched propeller).

For what it's worth, my fuel consumption per hour over the first 200 hrs of operation (Beta 25 on a 10,000 lb 38' sailboat) has been slightly lower than what is shown in the Beta technical data sheet. My boat is light with a very efficient (low drag) hull form (primarily a racing sailboat).

Chip,

I burn just about 1/2 gallon/hr with my Beta 38 in my Najad 343, typically running nearer 2500 RPM.

Agree with Mark that /km is a tough one without controlling too many things ... like current!

We have a Tatyana 37 with a Beta 38 running at 2400-2500 rpm the fuel consumption is about 1/2 gallon per hour..

There are so many variables, as current, headwind and loading (fuel, water provisions)tend to sway the figures,

I have found that slight fouling of the hull and especially the prop is a very major player on hull speed, more than you think.

figure about 5.5 knots per hour as a safe conservative number.
