Repowering from an Atomic 4 to a Beta 25?

Hi.  I'm looking at an Ericson 35-2 and its Atomic 4 engine has apparently given up the ghost. Rather than rebuild the A4, I'm wondering whether the Beta 25 diesel replacement for the A4 would work in an Ericson 35-2.  The engine apparently sits under the aft portion of the U-shaped dinette seating.  Anyone know if the Beta 25 would fit?  I'm worried if I went for a smaller diesel, the boat would be underpowered.  If it's smaller, would a 20 hp Beta work for an Ericson 35-2?

Also, what other costs would be associated? I'm guessing I would need to replace the fuel tank (since gas and diesel don't really play nice together) and does the transmission also need replacing.  Beta Marine brochure mentions a "bobtail" option that uses the existing transmission.  Is that wise?  Anything else (throttle

Finally, beyond all the practical questions, does anyone have a sense of the rough cost of this?  Just looking for ballpark figure to help with negotiating if I decide to go this way.

Thanks in advance!

Doug

Hello Doug,

The Beta 25 has been installed in the Ericson 35-2. The 25 hp engine is about the same size as the Atomic-4. It does sit a bit higher.

The Beta 20 will also work in the Ericson 35-2. A more realistic and usable power rating for the original Atomic-4 was about 18 hp.

You can reuse the original fuel tank. It will need to be drained and probably cleaned.

You will need to order the new engine with a transmission.

I suggest speaking with a local boat yard regarding installation costs. You can call or email me directly to get an idea of engine cost.
