I just finished insalling the Beta 16 and have a few questions. After the inital run of about 1.5 hours I shut down and inspected everything. The transmission was very hot to the touch. Is this normal being a non water cooled transmission. Also, my boat has developed severe stern squat at cruising speeds, is this a prop or more power than the last engine had issue? Something I hadn't anticipated considering the new engine is over 200lbs ligter than the old Volvo MD7A 13hp engine it had replaced. Lastly, the transmission fluid levels looked good out of the crate, but I was unable to open the transmission filler bolt, it just would not budge. Any suggestions?
The transmission is operating normally. The Technodrive/Twin Disc user manual states that the normal operating temperatures are 80-90°C (176-194°F) with a max. temp of 105°C (221°F).
This is a classic indication of too much power. Essentially, the boat is trying to exceed it's hull speed and is climbing it's own bow wave trying to plane. If your engine reaches it's maximum revs of 3,600 RPM give or take 50 RPM, then you are propped correctly and the load on the egine is OK. I recommend you back off the throttle to prevent this happening and save some fuel $'s. The additional power will be useful when heading into a current or head wind while under power.
The transmission fill plug is fitted to an aluminum housing and has a copper sealing washer. Sometimes, it can take more than the usual force to break the plug loose, particularly if also painted. A 27mm (1-1/16") socket and ratchet should get it loose.
