28HP DeLuxe Panel question

I've just re-engined to a BETA 28HP 3 cylinder, and all is fantastic .... except the water temperature gauge. I bought the deluxe panel, and the oil pressure, voltage and RPM all work perfectly. But the temperature gauge does some wierd things ....

When the ignition is turned on, before starting, the gauge reads maximum. Once started, at idle, the RPM gauge reads zero and the temperature gauge still reads maximum. As soon as revs are applied, the RPM gauge works properly; all tother gauges work OK ... but the temperature gauge returns to zero, and never moves off the stop.

I've double-checked the wiring diagram, but to no avail. Could this be a faulty sender?

I hope someone can shed some light on this problem.

Cheers,

Paul

Hello Paul,

I suspect that you do have a faulty sender. The way to check this is to disconnect the wire at the sender. Once the wire is free of the sender the gauge should read at the bottom of the scale (0). If you ground the wire to the engine you should get full deflection on the gauge which is correct. This proves the gauge works and that the sender is at fault. If this is faulty we will obviously replace it as it is under warranty.

Please call me at the ofice (252 249 2473) and let me know the Woc# (this begins with a K) and I will rush the replacement part to you.

Regards, Stanley

Stanley,

Thanx for your prompt response. I am working in the USA at the moment, but my boat is in the UK and I am not going back until September (sniff!). I'm missing all the good sailing weather, but I have to pay for the fun somehow.

I'll test the sender as soon as I get back. Please confirm that it is the wire on the top of the engine near the alternator belt.

Cheers,

Paul

Hello Paul,

You are correct, the temp sender is on the injection pump side of the engine just under the thermostat housing. Directly in front of it is the pulley for the fresh water pump which is driven by the alternator belt.

Please note when you return home that the Beta Marine factory have just moved to a new (and much larger)  factory. They obviously keep all replacement parts in stock as do their dealers in the UK.

Regards, Stanley
