Repowering Kadey Krogen 38 sailboat

My husband and I just bought one of your Beta 43 hp BV1903 engines.  It's currently in the garage as my husband works on getting it ready to be put into the boat.  He has some questions.

- What size verna lift muffler should we use?

-Is the valve that closes at the oil change pump soldered or it it just painted?

-Can the oil/gas filters be found at automotive stores?

-The engine will be located above the boat water line.  Is it better to have a high riser for the exhaust?

-Is there a more detailed manual with more parts listed?  We have the operators manual but my husband was hoping there was also something else available.  We did find the area on this website with some parts listed.

Hello Christal & Burt,

I will answer the question in the order of asking.....

The size of the Vernalift muffler is dependant on the boat, the engines location and the exhaust installation more than it is on the engine and therefore it is difficult for me to advise.  The length of the exhaust system will directly govern the water lift muffler that you need  The smallest we would recommend would be Centek 1500026 (Vernalift)

The valve on the oil change pump is a screw fit to the oil change pump.  The pump has a male thread, the valve a female.  A compound is used to seal the threads during assembly.

We list the Beta Marine, Kubota and Wix part numbers for the filters on our website, see
http://www.betamarinenc.com/parts.htm your local auto parts store should be able to cross reference the Wix number.  Also note our parts prices on the website, you will find these quite competitive. Please note you are advised to use genuine Beta Marine or Kubota filters during the warranty period.

The use of a high rise exhaust elbow is directly related to the shape of the engine compartment.  Let me explain.  The exhaust hose has to take a downward run to the waterlif muffler which is collection point for all the water that is in the exhaust system when the engine is shut down. If you cannot accomplish a 12" distance (minimum) from the standard exhaust elbow to the entry of the water lift muffler, you will need a high rise exhaust elbow.  If the exhaust outlet on the engine is at or below the waterline level, you must install an anti-siphon valve.

For more information on Vernalift mufflers and installation you can refer to Centek's website at http://www.centekindustries.com/exhaust/ex-index.htm

I hope this answers your questions adequately.

Bob
