BD722

I am considering repowering a Cal 330 that has an Atomic 4 in it. Doesn't run and needs to go.

I understand the A4 had 30 HP and I was wondering what the formula was for determining which Beta engine size would be sufficient to handle this boat. Would the 20 HP BD722 be capable of getting her going o.k.?

The boat weighs around 10,500#, 10'2" beam.  What about a prop? It has an old folding prop on it now that I'd like to replace.

Any info, suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The BD722 20HP Atomic 4 replacement will perform well in the Cal 3-30 in combination with a 3 bladed propeller (12" or 13" diameter).

If your Atomic 4 is hard bolted to the engine beds then the new engine will fit on the beds vacated and will line up with the shaft.

Thanks for quick response. I'm going down to see the boat again today.

If we purchase it and things work out o.k., I'll be giving you a call.

Thanks again,

M

It is my understanding that an A4 is rated at 30 HP at 3000 rpm. For the most part these are run in the 2000 rpm range delivering about 16 HP.

Hi, we have managed to get a copy of one of the old Universal sales brochures from one of our customers. This dates from the days when engine manufacturers made some exagerated claims for their engines. The HP curve is under ideal conditions with no loss from the alternator, water pump, air filter etc. Here is the link for this  http://www.betamarinenc.com/Performance%20graph%20for%20Atomic%204.htm

Basically 13HP at 2000RPM and 18HP at 2500 are the claims that concern most of us.

Have a great day, Stanley
